Their unique unit is expensive as hell, but it is still probably the best heavy cavalry unit in the game thanks to its trample damage, speed, and large anti-anticavalry armour. They have decent/good, but mostly cheap camels for anti-cavalry. They have the best trash spam thanks to their cheap skirms and spear line. This also means they are more like on the reacting side instead of being on the offence. Byzantines are effectively the only defensive civ in the game.
